Cambodia Summary

A Summary of the Cambodia Trip

Geographical:

We crossed the border from Vietnam into Cambodia by slow boat via the Mekong River. From there it was a short trip to Phnom Penh. From Phnom Penh we took a bus to Siem Riep and from there a short boat trip out to Battambang and back to Siem Riep. We then took a flight from Siem Riep out of Cambodia to Vientiane, Laos.

In total, we spent about two weeks in Cambodia. I would actually have liked to spend more time in Cambodia’s country side, but our timing was off with the long public holiday. It worked out better for us to just spend two weeks here.

Overall, the weather was good. We had some rain showers during most of the afternoons, but these were of very short duration and did not interfere in our activities.

Cambodia favourites:

Food: Khmer Curry
Place: Phnom Penh - probably due to the Green Lake Guesthouse, Stef and the friends we made here (Rob and Alan)
Site: Bayon at the Angkor temples
Ride: Norry (bamboo train) in Battambang

The ‘not so cools’:
Drugs being so easily available
Slow boat into Cambodia
The whole Khmer Rouge history

Basic words:
Hallo: Susaday!
Thank you: Awkun

Overall:

We loved Cambodia! The country has such a rich and dreadful history, that you cannot help but fall in love with the people and their country. The temples at Angkor Wat were definitely the highlight of the trip.

And then there are the Cambodian kids - I truly get why Angie decided to adopt a little one - no Mom, I am not bringing one home!
