Argentina Summary

Argentina Summary

Geographical:

We certainly underestimated the size of Argentina, but with a country of such enormity comes great geographical diversity. We entered Argentina in the South of Patagonia at El Calafate. From here we slowly made our way up North by bus, stopping over in El Chalten, Bariloche, Mendoza and Salta. From Salta, we travelled further North into Bolivia. After travelling through some other countries North of Argentina, we returned by plane to Buenos Aires and also did a side trip to the waterfalls of Iguazu before departing for Egypt from BA.

Weatherwise - Patagonia was freezing and Iguazu was boiling hot. It is very difficult to sum up the weather, it really depends where in the country we found ourselves.

Argentinean Favourites:
- Food glorious food - the steaks (Bife de Chorizo and Bife de Lomo) cannot be topped at these prices
- The best busses in the world
- The massive Perito Moreno glacier
- Meeting Maaike and Gerben and travelling with them
- Cycling from winery to winery in Mendoza
- Salta Salt Flats - being the only people on the salt flats at sunset
- Getting off the beaten track on our Salta road trip and spending time with the locals
- Watching a Tango in Buenos Aires
- The stunning views of the Lake District in Bariloche
- The massive Iguazu waterfalls
- Delicious Dulce de Leche (also see ‘Not so Cools’ below)

The ‘Not so Cools’:
- The enormous distances to cover in over night busses
- The freezing cold weather in Patagonia
- Bedbugs!!!
- Not the safest country for travellers
- The unfriendly snobbishness of the locals
- A bit on the expensive side - well, in comparison to the other countries we have travelled to.
- Fattening Dulce de Leche :)

Overall:

One thing I have to note about Argentina is the diversity of the landscapes: from glaciers and dry, barren Patagonia to wineries and salt flats, to massive waterfalls in a tropical setting, to beaches and high risers in the cities…Argentina has it all. And do I really have to mention the steaks again?!
